“My job is empowering the Youth of this country”: Rahul Gandhi

Interacting with the media at Jaipur after his two day Rajasthan visit Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said that he is in Rajasthan with one focus and that is to strengthen the Youth Congress and NSUI. Elaborating on his role he called himself a 'catalyst' and at the age of 39 found himself old enough to be called youngster. On a question related to reservation he said that more and more focus should be on supply of education which means more and more educational Institutions and facilities for youngsters.

Talking about the organizational elections being held in the Youth Congress, Congress General Secretary said, “We started this from Punjab, then Gujarat and then Pondicherry. We also did the same in Tamil Nadu, and now same is going on in Tripura, Rajasthan, UP and other states. There are two thoughts behind this process; first more and more youth should join these organizations and second democratization of these organization which will give them space to raise their voice. For that reason I am here and we are getting good response in Rajasthan. As this process is gearing up, so does its response increasing. . When we started up in Punjab, we had just around 30 thousand members but after elections we jumped to around 3.5 lakhs, getting more than ten fold increase in the membership. After Punjab we did it in Gujarat and added around 7.5 lakhs member. Thereafter, we did it in Pondicherry and in Tamil Nadu; in Tamil Nadu we added up around 14.5 lakhs members. So, this is showing a good progress. It is a matter of happiness to see the youth involved in such a huge number and a new dynamism has entered into the Youth Congress and the NSUI.”

Vote for the government of aam aadmi : Rahul Gandhi

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi while addressing an election rally at Ranchi(Jharkhand) said that poor people are the strength of this country, but our opposition feels ashamed of even discussing them. He said, “This election is an election between two ideologies. One ideology talks of aam aadmi represented by Congress and other is that of rich and selected people pushed by our opposition.”

He cited his visit to a village with a British Minister to show him the strength of the poor villagers. He said, “I took a British Minister to a village and spent night there. That minister had asked me to show the real strength of India. I suggested him to come out of big cities and go to the villages. The British minister understood the strength of India but our opposition has not still understood that; they ridiculed my visit saying that I am making a mockery of villagers.” He said that whatever development is visible in this country is due to the hard labour of the poor people. “They don’t want to talk about the poor, they even don’t see the labourers in Delhi,” he said.

This is a government of aam aadmi: Rahul Gandhi

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi while addressing an election rally in Firozabad(UP) in support of Congress candidate Raj Babbar said that the UPA has ensured a government of aam aadmi at the centre. “This is a government of the poor, Dalits, backward and the tribals,” he said. He was addressing a rally at P D Jain Inter College ground in Firozabad where there is a by- election for the Lok Sabha to be held on November 7, 2009. .

Congress General Secretary said, “The Idea behind the aam aadmi was to build one India providing equal opportunities for all. If we look at India today, there have been two Indias created over the years. One India is that of big people and the rich which is shining and other India is yours, mines and that of the poor, Tribal, farmers and Dalits. My view is that if this country has to move forward, it has to move together. So, in 2004 we formed a government for aam aadmi as we knew that it is the poor who faces most of the difficulties . They face problem in getting education and other facilities.”

He further said that the UPA government has been trying to do a lot for the farmers and the poor of this country. “Our government waived the loan of farmers worth Rs 60,000 crores. It is the farmer who produces food for us. But one of the then Chief Ministers of the NDA had said that we don’t need farmers at all; we have got the computers and call centers. Everyone eats the food grown by the farmers; you, me and everyone. But it is an irony that they still forget the farmer,” he said.
