Rahul Gandhi: MNREGA helped the poor to get job, income and social respect

Congress General Secretary RahulGandhi slammed BSP for rampant corruption and irregularities in Uttar Pradesh and accused Mayawati of looting public funds meant for the poor. “The money sent by the Congress led Centre for the benefit of the poor is not reaching you because ‘elephant in Lucknow’ is consuming it all,” said Rahul Gandhi while addressing various public meetings in Uttar Pradesh as part of his Congress campaign in the state. “To cushion the impact of alarming rise in unemployment, Congress (I)-led UPA government at the center implemented MNREGA Scheme – a flagship program - for providing minimum 100 days guaranteed employment to poor people in rural areas. Wages at the rate of Rs 120 x 100 days ensure minimum income of Rs 12,000 for every poor” informed the Congress General Secretary. The scheme has given a new hope to millions of poor, claimed Rahul Gandhi. It has helped the poor to get jobs, income and status in the society, added the Congress leader. While this scheme is a tremendous success in Congress (I) ruled states, in Uttar Pradesh the MNREGA failed to reach the poor, said Rahul Gandhi. “Instead the money was swindled by her government” alleged the Congress MP. Repeating that Mayawati was not at all interested in the welfare of the poor, Rahul Gandhi asked the people to give a chance to Congress to form government and assured that a government of the poor by Congress (I)  would ensure that benefits of the welfare schemes reach the poor.
