The Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are over and the new state government completed hundred days in office. Now when we look back and see, irrespective of number of seats Congress bagged, it is proving to be true the party has made a comeback after a long hiatus of over two decades.
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has made a principled dent in the decades-old political ambience in the state, which has been governed by regimes with sustenance derived from petty social consideration of castes and communities, and not certainly with an agenda for inclusive growth and development of one and all.
Political observers assert that electoral outcomes are simple arithmetic in the existing political system; notwithstanding the varying polling percentages and thus sadly, for being largely indifferent to collective sentiments having no space for any bifurcated interests. They also say that a society, deeply divided into sub-categories of caste and community, needs maturity to make fair distinction between good and bad intentions.
Some in the political corridor, with vested interests, has put Rahul Gandhi under scathing attack on the basis of poll outcomes in UP and even raised ‘hopes’ that the Congress party’s revival attempts would fail. But, independent political observers have a different view on it. Arvind Mohan, professor of economics at Lucknow University, said, “Rahul Gandhi made a serious effort…..To expect Rahul Gandhi to deliver 100 seats in UP is not the right way to look at it. Rahul Gandhi has made a good beginning for Congress……The party must sustain its effort for a while and Rahul Gandhi must make that investment. ….. With Gandhi, the Congress in UP is not in the negative…he is mascot of Congress and there is no point of abandoning him at this juncture…….” (quoted from Gulf News).
