Congress (I) has said that politics of opportunism and crime enabled Mayawati to secure power in Uttar Pradesh. But Mayawati government had nothing to do with welfare of the people. Label of Dalit was used only to garner votes of gullible people. Besides these criminals used muscle power to brow-beat and coerce people of dalit, OBC and minority communities to vote for BSP. Congress (I) said this explains why after coming to power Mayawati withdrew numerous criminal cases against her legislators and Sometimes back east UP mafia-turned-politician Amarmani Tripathi was convicted of murder. Tripathi, a MLA from Maharajganj was accused of criminal conspiracy of killing his lover Madhumita Shukla after she got pregnant. Tripathi's wife Madhumani and two others were also convicted. The trial of the case was shifted to Uttarakhand on the request of victim's family. At present, Tripathi has filed an appeal against trial court verdict in Uttarakhand High Court. He is lodged in Dehradun jail.
