Congress (I) has challenged Mayawati government to explain why Uttar Pradesh is lagging behind while states like Andhra Pradesh and Haryana under Congress (I) rule are developing fast. Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said Congress (I)-led UPA government at the centre has been sending numbers of schemes for welfare of people and development of the state. But the benefits are not reaching the people for whom the welfare schemes are meant, he said. Rahul Gandhi also alleged that instead of spending the money on the poor people, corrupt ministers, legislators and BSP leaders in connivance with contractors siphon off the money meant for poor people. As a result neither development is taking place nor are benefits of welfare schemes reaching the poor, he added. Corruption is thus benefiting only Mayawati’s ministers, legislators and BSP leaders who are busy in stealing the public money. This, in turn, is depriving the poor people of their due rights, said Rahul Gandhi.
