Mayawati’s Elephant in Lucknow swallows money of the poor: Rahul Gandhi

Lashing out against Mayawati minister for rampant corruption in her government, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has accused her of stealing money of the poor meant for welfare schemes for the poor. “The money sent for welfare schemes for the benefit of the poor is not reaching you because ‘elephant in Lucknow’ is eating it up,” he told the audience while addressing public meetings for the UP Assembly elections 2012. To cushion the impact of alarming rise in unemployment Congress (I)-led UPA government at the center launched MNREGA Scheme – a flagship program - for providing minimum 100 days guaranteed employment to poor people in rural areas. Wages at rate of Rs 120 X 100 days provide minimum income of Rs 12,000. The program has given a new hope to millions of poor, claimed Rahul Gandhi. It has provided employment, income and respectable status in the society to the poor, he added. While this scheme is a tremendous success in Congress (I) ruled states, in Uttar Pradesh the MNREGA under Mayawati government failed to reach the poor, said Rahul Gandhi.  Instead the money was swindled by her government. Highlighting that Mayawati is really not interested in the welfare of the poor, Rahul Gandhi urged the people this time to give chance to this party to form government and promised that a government of the poor by Congress (I)  would work for their welfare and ensure that benefits of the welfare schemes reach them.
