Hitting hard against BSP and SP for abandoning drought stricken Bundelkhand region to its fate, Congress (I) general secretary Rahul Gandhi has said these parties are responsible for the present plight of that region. The region has been reeling under severe drought leading to unemployment, poverty, hunger and even suicides, said Rahul Gandhi while addressing a public meeting in Hardoi on February 14 for the ongoing Assembly elections. Although it was the duty of the UP government to look after Bundelkhand, Congress (I)-led UPA government at the Centre provided a special package of Rs 8,000 crores, he said. It could have changed the entire area; the India Shining which the BJP talked about could have started, he added. The money under the package for digging up wells and providing tractors was misused and the farmers who also invested their share for the wells suffered losses. Highlighting that though it had given no such promise in 2004-2009, Congress (I) even then worked for Bundelkhand, Rahul Gandhi said the non-congress governments have been neglecting their duties towards the people of the state. Assuring the people that his party would put the state on fast track development, Rahul Gandhi urged them this time give a chance to Congress (I) to form government. He assured that Congress (I) will do this all in next five years which these parties failed to do in last 22 years.
