Slamming Mayawati for not being serious about implementation of social welfare schemes, Congress (I) has said there is a huge scandal in Marriage/Illness Financial Assistance Scheme. The scheme provides assistance to poor people and those belonging to backward communities in case there is marriage or illness in the family. An amount of Rs 11,000 is granted in such cases. The benefit of this scheme is not reaching the targeted people. As a result there has been more misuse of this scheme by bogus persons than its beneficial use by the genuine persons. Social audit has revealed that poor people living in remote areas have not even heard of this scheme. Unsocial elements in connivance with corrupt officials are getting the marriage card and doctor’s certificate printed and on that basis claiming financial assistance. State government has suffered loss of crores of rupees on this account, said Congress (I).
